💌 Thank you all for your support of Refuge Worldwide this year. With a massive team effort, we've hit our fundraising target, moved the radio station from Weserstraße to Niemetzstraße, and begun a whole new chapter of this adventure. Big love to everyone that donated to the crowdfunding campaign, to all those who hosted or attended an event, appeared on the radio, or worked beside us across the last 12 months. It truly was a year of doors closing and doors opening.

🏥 Workers at Berlin's Vivantes hospitals including maintenance staff, assistants, gardeners, cleaners and cooks have been on strike this year, with a crowdfunding campaign set up to cover their loss of wages.

Berlin alliance "Health Instead of Profits" and other organisations have been building a support group for the striking workers and are currently collecting donations. The strike was launched as a last resort after the outsourcing of jobs at Berlin hospitals.

Writing on the crowdfunding page and in Klasse Gegen Klasse, Karl from the strike's central team explains that, "hospitals are increasingly run like businesses that must generate profit. Health is becoming a commodity. Entire departments are outsourced to subsidiaries where lower wages can be paid". The crowdfunding page states that outsourcing of jobs has seen "lower pay, staff shortages, and increased workloads."

Vivantes operates several clinics and hospitals, including the Kreuzberg facility Klinikum Am Urban on Dieffenbachstraße.

Healthcare in Germany is extremely expensive, while Berlin's Senate (the sole owner of Vivantes) is operating under austerity measures, cutting spending and outsourcing services due to a "shortfall in the state budget".

In 2025, Germany's military spending grew to $114 billion according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (April 2026).

Around 2,200 people work for Vivantes subsidiary groups. Over 98% of their union members voted for strike action.

The line up has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for laidback, global sounds in the day time or full-throttle rave at night.

Tomorrow, Sunday May 3, we are happy to present four recordings from the last edition of @mutekmontreal, which took place in August 2025.

Starting from 4PM Berlin / 10AM Montréal, the program contains two talk shows from the MUTEK Forum, touching on topics of environmental activism and AI’s effect on creativity. There are also live recordings of Baby Volcano’s reggaeton, rap, and hybrid-pop, as well as Gayance performing alongside seven top local musicians.

👋 Culture senator for Berlin, Sarah Wedl-Wilson, resigned last Friday amid a funding scandal involving "irregular distribution of €2.6m in public money for programmes to fight antisemitism." Various outlets are reporting that a total of 13 projects received funding without proper processing or procedures being followed.

Sarah Wedl-Wilson is the second cultural minister to resign in the last 12 months, after Joe Chialo in May 2025.

In the last two years, the Berlin Senate has cut several budgets across the city, endangering independent artists, venues, and youth initiatives.

Berlin will see state elections in September of this year, bringing with it a chance to replace the black-red coalition currently headed up by Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU).
