Join us for a striking new staging of ‘The Tragicall Historie of Hamlet, Shakespeare’s First Quarto' - a shorter, rarely performed version of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Told with striking differences in structure, dialogue and character names, the story unfolds with compelling theatrical energy, combining powerful storytelling with live music, song and movement.

A kingdom is unsettled. The King of Denmark is dead, his brother now wears the crown, and Prince Hamlet is left grieving - and suspicious. When the ghost of his father appears with a terrible revelation, Hamlet is drawn into a dangerous quest for truth and revenge. As secrets unravel and loyalties are tested, the royal court becomes a place of spies, deception and growing madness. Hamlet must decide how to act in a world that no longer feels certain.

Directed by Mark Dornford-May and performed by our all-County Durham cast in our immersive venue, The Playhouse in Horden, Shakespeare’s gripping tale is staged once more, providing a fresh perspective on the familiar story.

We’re thrilled to have opened a new theatre space this week with @ensemble84. The Playhouse is a former Catholic church, now reimagined as a space for people to come together - to make work, to see work, and to connect across divides.

In a part of the country where so much has been stripped away over time, it felt important to create something rooted in hope, ambition and community. A place that belongs to local people, but that also says loudly that world-class culture should happen here too.

Sir Ian McKellen was the perfect person to open it with us. We invited partners, artists and local people into the space and it genuinely felt real like the beginning of something exciting for the North East.

At a time when infrastructure is fragile and culture can feel under threat from so many directions, this felt like a demonstration of what’s still possible with belief, support, collective ambition and a bit of magic.

The power of community, and the importance of spaces that bring people together, has never felt clearer. We’re proud to be part of this.

This could be you! One week left to apply to join our company as a performer.

We're looking for up to 5 individuals from County Durham to join our ensemble, with paid training and performance opportunities from February 2026 until July 2026. By joining Ensemble ‘84, you will be part of a dynamic ensemble committed to creating bold new theatre for the 21st Century, which may include our next production!

Who We’re Looking For
- Performers of all ages (must be over 18 on or around the 1st February). There is no upper age limit and we encourage those in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s 60s and beyond to apply.
- Based in County Durham - have a County Durham postcode or live within a 10 mile radius of Horden. If you are unsure, ask us before you apply.
- Be able to commit to attending from February 2026 to July 2026 for workshops, creation and performances.

You don't need previous experience to apply, just a passion for performing and willingness to undertake training, with a view to become a professional performer within a year.

- Performers of all ages (must be over 18 on or around the 1st February). There is no upper age limit and we encourage those in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s 60s and beyond to apply.
- Based in County Durham - have a County Durham postcode or live within a 10 mile radius of Horden. If you are unsure, ask us before you apply.
- Be able to commit to attending from February 2026 to July 2026 for workshops, creation and performances.
