✨ 2024 had me COVERED! ✨

I had such a fantastic array of commissions come my way this year including a whole host of editorial cover illustrations! It’s always so satisfying collating them all at the end of the year, so here’s your roundup…

1. A dream project with @kerrywakefieldwork for @waitrose magazine 25th anniversary
2. Continuum Magazine - the magazine of @brownpublichealth - ‘What can different health care systems learn from one another?’ Cc: @howdoyoudo_agency
3. Transform Magazine
4. 3D Magazine - the alumni publication for @dartmouthcollege
5. @theparliamentmagazineeu cover 1 of 3 - the Alternative to the Alternative
6. A very fun Culture cover for the @guardian with @ceeg at the helm
7. Therapy Today
8. Super fun bucket list cover for @bigissueuk featuring @countbinface - what a moment!
9. Another Culture cover, this time under the creative guidance of sara_ramsbottom_design
10. I always love working with @page33.studio and this cover for @pennnursing was a pleasure!
11. The second of 3 cover illustrations for @theparliamentmagazineeu - ‘A Europe led NATO’
12. A very recent cover illustration for Expression Magazine - the alumni magazine for @emersoncollege ‘From LA with love’
13. The third and most recent cover for @theparliament - Von Der Leyen 2.0

The most enormous thank you to all you wonderful art directors and designers who commissioned me this year. I couldn’t be more grateful! ✨

I was recently asked by a client if they could have a photo of me working on the illustration they were commissioning (more on this soon). I work in a room at home, which is lovely but also has it’s downsides. It is the reality for a lot of creatives though, particularly at a time when many of us can’t justify the cost of a shared studio space. So let’s talk about ways to make this sometimes isolating, not very glamorous work situation more positive.

I recently started walking to work with Charlie and then just turning round and walking (or running!) right back home again. This is cool because we get to have a nice little chat and I have a bit of fresh air for 40 minutes (even if he does leave the house at 7:20! 🫠) but basically, a walk for a walk’s sake is a good start the day.

Stop for lunch. I suck at this (some followers may remember I also suck at lunch full stop - what else is there apart from eggs?!) but I’m trying to have lunch in a different room at actual lunch time. Impressive I know.

FaceTime another pal that works from home. This is my greatest hack for any of you that find working from home a lonely experience. And I really want to be real about this because it is lonely. A scheduled call with a friend once a week can make a big difference.

Permit yourself to leave the house. I have a productivity problem that renders me glued to my desk so that I feel like I’m doing things even if I’m not. Just over a year ago I joined a choir (it’s in a pub, I highly recommend this) and I’ve recently started going to yoga more regularly. This human interaction comes without massive social demands but means I get to be around a variety of people as a regular part of my week.

Audiobooks - this year I have listened to every single David Sedaris book he’s written so needless to say I think he’s quite brilliant. I like non-fiction best so that I can simultaneously focus on work.

Read (/listen to!) 4000 Weeks’ by Oliver Burkeman I really really meant it.

If you’ve got any other hot tips pleeeeease let me know!!

It’s been a little while since I posted about Stormy Seas, but if there’s ever a time to talk about this project, it’s in a week where we are seeing CHILDREN at racist, right-wing, anti-immigration protests.

It’s so hard to make sense of the hatred spilling onto the streets in the UK this week. You only have to look at our media to understand how these abhorrent views are fuelled. But the fact that they are being passed on to and enacted by children is truly disturbing. Never has education on the subject of immigration and asylum been more crucial.

I worked on this book back in 2016, when the Brexit vote happened and Trump came to power. It was published in 2017 and has since seen multiple foreign language editions, much to mine and MaryBeth’s delight.

If you’re looking for a book to help your children understand the importance of this subject, please do consider Stormy Seas. Compassion is such a beautiful antidote to the hatred.

My most recent illustration for @wwf - Conservation leader Avecita Chicchón on conservation that lasts 🌍🌿

I love illustrating great people!

Avecita Chicchón is a longtime advocate for environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods across Latin America. She has played a central role in designing and implementing Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiatives that help finance protected areas across the Andes and Amazon—bringing governments, communities, and funders together to solve complex challenges and create lasting impact. She leads the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Andes-Amazon Initiative.

The second illustration I created with @pieshopdesigns for the Latin and Caribbean Oil Rush series for the @guardian

‘If they pollute our rivers, what will become of us?’: the town divided between hope and fear in Brazil’s Amazon oil rush’

As a state-controlled company explores for oil in the fragile Equatorial Margin the government struggles to balance its ecological promises with fossil fuel expansion. In Oiapoque, the stakes could not be higher

The latest cover illustration for @theparliamentmagazineeu - this one explores the recruitment crisis of females in armies across Europe.

Really enjoyed this one! I’ve included my preferred colour palette option at the end.

And a happy sunny Friday to you all! 🌞Earlier this year I worked on a really fun illustration with @katiekalupson_timemag for Food Fanatics magazine. As well as a full page opener, I also created these spot portraits for the feature. Swipe to see the whole spread!

A very enjoyable illustration for the journal last week, and as usual a super tight turnaround!

This was for a brilliant piece about friction maxxing by Gaby Hinsliff. ‘I baulked at the idea of ‘friction-maxxing’. But there’s more to it than meets the eye.’

Earlier this week I worked on an illustration with @gerrylb for the @newstatesman - it was a book review about ‘London Falling’ by Patrick Radden Keefe, and to be honest it took all my strength to actually work on the illustration and not go out and buy the book immediately.

‘Patrick Radden Keefe’s obituary for Britain
In London Falling, the American journalist presents the capital as a dying, amoral city’

Gerry always gives me such great briefs, and the nature of them means I get to be more expressive than a lot of other fast turnaround editorial work. I’ve included some in progress screenshots for you to see some of the different outcomes before we settled on the final

New work for a new client! This was an illustration exploring the lack of transparency about how much things actually cost in magazines for @dwellmagazine

I’ve included another worked up rough at the end which I preferred, but the client had a very specific vision for this and I’m always happy to make that vision a reality!

The Latin and Caribbean oil rush

‘Ready to be exploited’: amid rust, weeds and power cuts, Venezuelans hope for a new oil boom
The infrastructure is crumbling and the government shaky, but memories exist of an industry that once thrived off Venezuela’s vast reserves of crude – and could do again, despite the climate crisis

The most recent cover illustrations for The Parliament magazine - ‘Stacked against US - Europe’s struggle for digital independence’

I always find it tricky to work on illustrations with no human element. Faces always draw you in, and failing that, hands can be really expressive and create that sense of human connection. This one relies really heavily on shape and texture, and despite some initial skepticism on my part, I’m actually really pleased with how it turned out!

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
