Happy AAPPI month from a proud Filipino here 🇵🇭

As a mestizo, I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome for a long time. People always ask if I’m “really Filipino” or give me weird looks because I cook Filipino food. I feel like I constantly have to explain myself, my family, and where we come from.

Sometimes I wonder if mixed race people of color are understood when it comes to identity. There’s this feeling that you have to prove yourself over and over again. And in food, it can feel even heavier, like if your food isn’t good enough, you’ll be judged even harder by your own community.

But I wouldn’t change who I am for the world.

I’m beyond grateful to have been raised by strong Filipino women who shaped me, fed me, taught me love through food, and made me proud of where I come from. Everything I cook carries pieces of them with me every single day ❤️

It meant everything to grow alongside her in vulnerability and strength.

We say it all the time, cooking doesn’t have to be so serious! We’re just here for a good time in this small, beautiful life. And the people who walk through our doors take a piece of that with them. She helped build that feeling. @zoeunverferth moved before we even had to ask, bringing light into every service.

We’ll miss her like crazy, but we’re so happy for her next chapter ❤️

This rosé from @rajatparr négoce project reminds me of being a teenage girl, wandering into Bath & Body Work’s and smelling all the candles, testing out the soaps, putting 5 different lotions on one arm. Being utterly overwhelmed with florals like rose, fresh strawberries and perfectly ripe melons. It sits so delicately on your palate with perfect acid and the feeling of California.

Come in and tell me what these wines remind you of? I’m truly dying to know!
