Renowned Jerusalem-born writer Ghada Karmi is a doctor of medicine by training and a specialist in the history of medieval Islamic medicine—a background that enabled her to research the period of her novel, Murjana, using the original historical sources, and create the novel’s main characters, the caliph’s physician, and the medicine he practiced. Karmi has held a number of academic posts in Middle East history and politics, most recently at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, UK. She is a forceful voice in the struggle for Palestinian rights and has published six books to date, including her acclaimed memoir In Search of Fatima: A Palestinian Story. Murjana is Karmi’s debut novel. Part love story and part murder mystery—with a touch of The Arabian Nights—Murjana is a tale of love, passion, loss, murder, and religious strife set against the dynamic background of ninth-century Baghdad. The novel opens with the Caliph at death’s door, struck down by a mysterious illness. Only Abu Mansour al-Tabrizi, Baghdad’s most famous doctor, is able to diagnose the cause. The Caliph’s malady is a love-sickness akin to madness for a beautiful, young woman named Murjana. It is an affliction that only marriage can cure. But Murjana is from a Shia family, and such a union could pose danger to a Sunni caliph and a Sunni society. The story of their love becomes an ode to the power of passion to erase boundaries. But enmity and vengeance stalk them, and only when tragedy strikes does division and conflict reveal their futility. Murjana is a passionate and compelling novel that paints a vivid picture of a vanished Islamic age as it summons up a medieval world that seems relevant to our understanding of the Middle East today. A must-read page-turner!

Our book of the week this week is Thomas Suárez's PALESTINE MAPPED, a lavishly illustrated and meticulously guided excursion through the mapping of historic Palestine from the earliest record through to the twenty-first century.

Palestine is as much a place in the psyche of those who mapped it as it is a region of the earth. An authority on the history of cartography who has also written extensively on Palestine, Thomas Suárez is uniquely qualified to address the mapping of this region “from the river to the sea.”
