DIMIN is pleased to announce representation of Kelli Vance (b. 1983, Garland, TX).
@kelvance
Kelli Vance’s female subjects command authority and agency, while the compositions unravel into explorations of sexuality, identity, and control. Each chosen object carries layers of symbolism: pears recalling the feminine form celebrated in Renaissance art; cheese and fruits a nod to memento mori; cherry pie evoking sexual metaphor and contradiction through its sweet yet tart nature. Luxurious foods, textiles, and accessories invite indulgence, yet the women who wield them disrupt any straightforward pleasure, imbuing each scene with ambiguity and latent threat. Through these carefully layered references, Kelli Vance crafts images that embody the femme fatale: alluring, dangerous, and ultimately defiant.
Vance presented her first solo exhibition “The Velvet Trap” at DIMIN in 2025. Her work was recently acquired by The Mack Art Foundation (MAF), and the Elie Khouri Art Foundation (EKAF); and is in the permanent collection of the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Roswell, New Mexico, and Houston Airports, city of Houston. Vance received an Individual Artist Grant from Houston Arts Alliance and the City of Houston and was included in the 2009 Texas Biennial. She was a finalist for the Hunting Art Prize and was a Roswell Artist-in-Residence in Roswell, New Mexico.
Kelli Vance graduated from the University of Houston with her MFA in Studio Art in 2008.

One aspect of my work revolves around the ‘femme fatale’.
The depictions of the ‘femme fatale’ via the Renaissance and later the Pre-Raphaelite painters, were fascinating to me when I was young, and that fascination still holds true; there was something about them that spoke to me psychologically. I loved wondering what it was that they might do next. The parts of the story that weren’t shown were just as interesting as the parts that were, and I delighted in the symbolism of objects and clothing.
The trope of the femme fatale has its roots in male anxiety surrounding emerging female agency, political power and sexual independence. In the Renaissance, the imagery emphasized the religious or moral implications of female power, while in the 19th century, as women gained higher status in society (thanks to the rise of the feminist movement), depictions were used to warn against the dangers of unregulated female power.
The concept of the femme fatale is a projection and a construction; it is a myth historically represented in male-dominated imagery. The problematic nature of this trope is not lost on me as I try to navigate what it means to make work alongside this genre as a woman today. I find it satisfying to turn to the femme fatale as a way to visually fight back as women’s rights are being stripped away and we regress as a society. I paint women (who are all me, but that’s for another post), that are quietly saying ‘Fuck around and find out’. I hope to imbue them with control over their own fate and a power that permeates through the entire painting.
“While traditionally representing dangerous and untrustworthy ambition, modern interpretations reframe the femme fatale archetype as a powerful autonomous woman, sometimes embodying a form of ‘cosmic justice’ against corrupt and oppressive male authority.”
…. waiting for the day there won’t be a need for these women to all have a knife nearby.
