This week the University of Guelph (where I’m peripherally employed in community media) cancelled its arrangements to provide venues for the People’s Conference for Palestinian Solidarity, days before the event. “This cancellation was issued without warning, explanation or any transparency in their reasoning.”
I am in full agreement with the following declaration by @guelph4palestine :
“This represents a direct attack on academic freedom, human rights advocacy, and the Palestinian community… the University of Guelph has undermined scholarship, community engagement, and freedom of expression on its campus. This is anti-Palestinian racism masquerading as administrative authority.”
Within just a few days, the organizers, Guelph4Palestine, the Palestinian Youth Movement, Independent Jewish Voices (@ijvguelph ) Labour for Palestine and Students for Justice in Palestine worked with community organizations @artnotshame Royal City Mission, @opirg_guelph @10carden and more to respond to @uofguelph ‘s failure and assure the conference could go on in various spaces in the city.
I am disappointed and angered by the University of Guelph’s actions, and simultaneously deeply moved by the way these truly community-focused organizations worked together to ensure that this beautiful and essential conference could happen. I am grateful to have been involved. Thank you @guelph_palestineconference
