today is 7 years since mom passed. i try to spend time on this day to remember her and write about parts of her i don’t want to forget. i beat myself up when i can’t commit enough attention to my memory of her, this weird impossible pressure to somehow be present with the past. it’s self-pity mostly but my lack of ability to reflect on her as deeply and sincerely as i would like to reminds me that she was a deeply reflective and contemplative person. i remember this and feel some relief, ease up on myself, and reflect on her insistence to be present in the moment, to reflect on the present in a way that makes the present, or our grasp on it, meaningful. when otherwise the present would so readily rush past us, is indifferent to our inattention and worry and pain, but does reward a practice of meditation.sometimes i would get annoyed, you know? when i wanted to move on to something else and mom would say wait, let’s pause, consider why this moment is important or how our shared experience deepens our perception of this event or look at that building isn’t it kind of strange-looking with its coffin-shaped windows (a building i saw today) and isn’t it awesome that we get to laugh about it together. laughter, that witness to presence. and then i think about her inner life and wonder about all the parts of her i never knew and never will. that inner life that was just hers. how did she incorporate reflection into her daily life and where did her thoughts take her? today i celebrate that i don’t know, i celebrate the mystery of Cristina.
