A windy little moment in Kentucky with Annick Odom— we’d only just met, but quickly decided to catch a field recording out in the elements. Annick’s carrying on a tradition she learned directly from Phyllis Marks, one of the last of her kind — a ballad singer who kept centuries of story alive with her voice alone.

My girl @odomann this is amazing.

@mjrowan is the wonderful voice you hear in Taking Elevators on my album @linenofwords. He is singing in many of the choral sections on the album. He was so great to work with and nailed all the parts in basically one go - a true professional! He is also the brother of one of my best friends from college so it was fun to have him join the project 🥹

And! He started a choir! It’s called Crossroads: A Detroit Choral Project. They have a Facebook page and organize really special concerts. If you’re in the SE Michigan area, find them and give them a follow.

Morgantown - we’ll be back this weekend for the @morgantowncrankiefestival to play a song Hannah Standiford brought to us along with a crankie she made. Crankies are beautiful handmade scrolling panoramas- paper movies - hand-cranked analog animation!

We’re performing Saturday May 30 at 7 pm and also Sunday May 31 at 4 pm at the @monartscenter

Grace Jackson (@feralfaucett) and @squarelakesounds opened their home up to so many folks during the @squarelakesounds studio recording sessions for @linenofwords. Grace sang some killer harmonies in all of the choir sections. We’ve known each other since undergrad, and it’s been so cool to stay in touch and reconnect when I moved back to the US. 💕

If you haven’t listened to their own music (under Pepperoni Wilson), you’re in for a sometimes silly and always magical treat. Now based in Atlanta, Cameron is working on something new (says a little birdie) so you should give them a follow!

I played with Cameron on basically every @linenofwords gig I had in Michigan, and they made me sound so good! I don’t play with drummers often, and it was really helpful to work with someone with such a light touch and vibrant imagination for where my songs could go.

We improvised a lot on many of the songs over those two years, and my music grew so much from being played with Cameron. 🧀

Thank you again to the folks who came and celebrated my album’s release at @eddiespaghettiart 🧵🪡 you may have thought I’d made it through thanking all the musicians on @linenofwords but I haven’t!

@lindsaymccaw is singing many choir parts and harmonies on the album, in particular Bow and Balance! I love love love her sense of humor in her own music and art, including projects like @flyingcardboardtheater @the_boblo_islanders @roochietoochie and @thevelvetboys (with @renofour who is also on the album!). Lindsay also totally is on the short list of folks who inspired me to organize the @morgantowncrankiefestival where she’ll also be performing thanks to the @cultural_vibrancy micro grant.

Note: Lindsay’s puppets are way cooler than these sock monkey stock photos ever could be. You’ll have to go check out one of her puppet shows to be in the know. 🙈
