V fond memories of all the good times with the amazing cast… Less fond memories of having 3 mins to strip out of a soaking wetsuit, get into a new costume (including wig) then run back out into the stadium with my trousers falling down because I didn’t do the Velcro properly 🙃

Proud to have done my lil bit on this film! Leading movement sessions for the lead actors to help them get into their bodies and embody the gutsy side of their characters.

Satisfying to see the transformation from the classic “Just to let you know, I don’t dance…” to them really going for it in the rehearsal room, to them gallivanting with abandon across the Yorkshire Dales on the big screen 🍿 🎥

Didn’t get any pics or vids of the movement so swipe for a clip of @shmillshmakin and @zidrums accompanying my sessions with their topppp grooves. Was dreamy to have them with me on this.

“Emily” is still in cinemas (just about!) so catch it while you can!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ruby Portus is a UK based dancer and choreographer. Her choreography playfully combines movement and character to subvert conventions that she believes are past their sell-by date. She has created commissioned works for Sadler’s Wells, Good Chance Theatre’s The Walk and Northern School of Contemporary Dance as well as her own Arts Council England funded projects. She was an inaugural Young Associate at Sadler’s Wells.

Ruby’s performance credits include a recent Japanese Tour of Dawns y Ceirw by National Dance Company Wales @ndcwales and Theatr Cymru Other credits include working with @johnwilliamwatson , @geckotheatre, Welsh National Opera and@denadadt

Áine (they/them) is a queer interdisciplinary dance artist based in Leeds. Áine’s practice, whilst rooted in contemporary dance and improvisation, draws from various forms including theatre, comedy and live music, and is informed by queerness,
anti-capitalist and anti-oppressive politics.
They graduated from London Contemporary Dance School and have since worked as a
devising performer across dance, theatre and improvisation with artists such as @maresa_von_stockert Tilted
Productions/Maresa Von Stockert, Ine Claes, @speedwelldance , and @andersduckworth .
They are a founder member of @badbodychaoscode a pop-punk band and collective that
makes euphoric, surreal and subversive performances.

I worked with Ruby earlier this year on WNO’s production of Peter Grimes. She was dance captain in a troupe of 5 dancers (four on stage and one cover). Ruby also acted the role of William, Peter’s first apprentice.

In this first black and white set, Ruby demonstrates how epic her jumps are, and the amazing poses she is able to create midair.

I worked with Ruby earlier this year on WNO’s production of Peter Grimes. She was dance captain in a troupe of 5 dancers (four on stage and one cover). Ruby also acted the role of William, Peter’s first apprentice.

In this first black and white set, Ruby demonstrates how epic her jumps are, and the amazing poses she is able to create midair.
