My @thrustfest class is now available as a digital class. When you purchase it you get an email with a link and password to watch the video, which is a 72-minute lecture with some q+a at the end, as well as over 30 slides of my writing, reference images, and a few extra links at the end for additional reading.

I know when people think menswear they think suits, and while we go over some suiting stuff, his turned out as more of a general masc-leaning "Drag design" class. We go over the aspects of costume design that are considered to create "elevated" drag, like silhouette, color, scale, texture, and narrative that can work for many gender presentations, not just traditional masc. I think even queens new to costume design would gain tips to take away from it.

The class goes over:

-What does “elevated” drag even mean (it’s not more expensive)

-How to research your characters world and aesthetics

-How to exaggerate scale, silhouette, color, texture and gendered aesthetics to bring your look from pedestrian to extraordinary

-Low/no sew tips for fitting clothes off the rack and making better off the rack purchasing choices

-Tips for improving (or faking) visual polish on any budget

-Masculinizing body/silhouette tips

-Sources that I shop from and a worksheet to measure yourself for your own costume purchases

For the price of a shirt and pants at goodwill, you could have over an hour of info and 30 slides on how to put together better looking costumes. I don’t usually talk a big game about my teaching but I spent a lot of time writing this course and it is JAM packed for its length and price so I hope anyone looking to up their drag costumes takes advantage!

✨ Vibe and craft with other costumers at A2’s Fiber Arts Shop! This social coworking night is open to all drag, theatre, cosplay, and any other folks who are working on costume pieces! Skill sharing and socializing are welcome but not mandatory— If you just want to put your headphones on and lock in and parallel work with others, that is also welcome. While staff supervising the event will not be giving lessons or demos, you can bounce ideas off of them or fellow coworkers about your creative projects.

📍 If it’s your first time working in the Fiber Arts room, please try to arrive promptly at 4pm to join a short orientation to go over shop/community rules and where everything is.

📌 Because space is limited in fiber arts, RSVP is required for this event! Once workspace in the room is at capacity, we will have overflow workspace to take your materials to tables in the A2 flex space (right outside the room) to work—so RSVP and get there early!

I knew with my first couple of travel gigs lined up right before this show, I would wanna perform songs I already know and love and clean up some of my classic looks from my closet. I first performed this song my first couple months in drag at an open stage and hadn’t brought it back out since. It can be exhausting always trying to come up with the most banger gaggy numbers, reveals, stunts etc so I’m trying to remind myself you can just entertain by performing a great song that you really love.

And if you saw my unglued lace flapping in the breeze, no you didn’t 🥰

✨You will never understand what it means to live your life, without meaning or control, and with nowhere left to go✨

I wanted to share this fave lil sequence of mine from my Aladdin act from Mantasia! This song is so theatrical and has really grown on me. For ages I had no idea how to perform it (dressed as a punk guy?) but then it occurred to me, it’s a common story- about a rich girl who’s slumming it and fetishizing the perceived specialness, freedom and charm of someone from a lower class- it’s Aladdin all the way! I intended it to be a moment of lamenting how he felt towards Jasmine wanting to escape wealth to live a life like his, and how beneath the romance of it it’s not very glamorous. It had a lot of overlap of my experiences living as a struggling artist as a young person, and being fetishized as a “manic pixie dream girl” or some other romantic take on neurodivergence and surviving as an artist and creative, by partners in more privileged classes who never lived my experience. At my shows, I always encourage when portraying existing characters, to avoid direct cosplay acts and to aim to do a redesign in your drag style. That’s especially what Mantasia was design for- showing your point of view as a costume designer.

I’m really proud of not just this look (made by me- one of my more complicated sewing projects), but also the set for this act. The bed is a repurposed ikea chaise section, that I designed a new padded headboard that would be more structured for performing on, and had that added foothold bar to do the little lean back trick and a place to sit on top of it. The headboard was built by @corley_handywork, and upholstered by me and @_dykotomy_ the night before the show- meaning that was the first time I ever got to practice on it- very nerve wracking 😰. The draped curtains in the background are supported by custom floor stands, welded by @scrapssparcs and draped by me. Not many drag venues in Boston have the space for sets, so it’s always a joy in my productions when I get to incorporate that interest into a drag act.
