“I took The Three Dancers as a reference, painted in 1925 with a proper indulgence. A painters painting. There’s an earthiness to the work - the paint wants to be paint. There’s an alchemy that occurs, watching the movement of people on stage or the movement of paint on canvas. Good work stirs you and thickens your spirit, and the bags you take in to a show are rarely the bags you walk out with. There’s a folklore-ish trick enacted when a performer covers their body in new skin and channels something else from somewhere else. It’s akin to spells being cast and I think Picasso was keenly aware of his own metamorphosis. He regularly imagined himself as a Minotaur.”
