‘Chinese Restaurant Playground’ is my first solo exhibition about childhood, imaginative play, and finding joy within the frenetic settings of my parents’ country-town Chinese restaurant. 🧧🍚
Having served four generations of customers for over 40 years, my parents’ Chinese restaurant, Yee’s, was the backdrop of my childhood. Located in the small country town of Branxton in NSW, Yee’s has a very unique layout. With our home attached to the back of the restaurant, my entire family was practically at the restaurant 24/7 during my childhood.
My older sister, younger brother and I were very creative in keeping ourselves entertained in this unique setting. We spent hours rollerblading across the tiles in our parents’ restaurant, playing ten pin bowling using empty bottles from the kitchen, playing hide and seek after closing the restaurant, making play dough using spring roll batter, flying a kite and riding the Yamaha Pee Wee 50 in the big yard behind the restaurant, which looked out onto my neighbour’s farm.
While I have endless fond memories of growing up in this thrilling environment, a regional family-run Chinese restaurant can be a place of mixed emotions for both the parents and children. Feelings of a true sense of community, friendship, stress, alienation, anger, stability and joy can exist all at once. For much of the time, it was the joy and innocence of childhood play that acted as a buffer against the anxiety inducing parts of running a regional Chinese restaurant.
’Chinese Restaurant Playground’ is dedicated to childhood joy, imagination and my memories as a child of Malaysian-Chinese restaurant owners in Branxton.

Congratulations to @pinkpantheress for winning @bbcradio1 Sound Of 2022. 💥💥💥
Had lots of fun working on the animated visuals for her mixtape alongside @elliot_perkins @ep.studios.creative and I’m stoked to see one of our creations get some air time on @bbcnews and @bbcradio1 . 👏
I’m also glad that the sneaky ‘Johnson and Friends’ clip I slipped into the edit made an appearance. There’s nothing like some creepy 90’s Aussie kids TV 📺 @abctv

Thank you to @maitlandregionalartgallery and @uni_newcastle for having me at the incredible FUTURE CREATIVES event in October this year. ✨
FUTURE CREATIVES is a day of artist talks and workshops for high school students in years 9-12 in the Hunter region. I feel very honoured to have spoken at the town hall (just around the corner from where I went to high school) about my creative childhood hobbies, what my goals were in high school, how I got to where I am now, and how I’m continuing to navigate life and my creative ambitions.
Seeing an event like this that fosters open-mindedness and creativity, particularly in a regional town that I have a connection to, was very special.
I’m grateful to have been included in an epic lineup of artists including @blakdouglas , @bonnie_hislop , @junkyardrabbit, @louisamagrics and @bridiewattartmaking_ .
Thank you to @alexmorriswrite and the team at Maitland Regional Art Gallery for organising this event. 👏

💥Full conversation available on YouTube now. Link in bio.💥
Earlier this year, @jenniferwongcomedian and I joined forces at @maitlandregionalartgallery for a live conversation about the families behind Australia’s regional Chinese restaurants.
We were joined by Branxton legend, Danny Yam, who is a former Chinese restaurant owner and current chef at Mellow Bistro in Maitland. He shared his wisdom and unique life experiences as a parent and chef of 40 years in Australia, while I shared my stories as a child of Malaysian-Chinese restaurant owners.
This multilingual (English and Cantonese) and intergenerational conversation sheds light on the different experiences of what happens behind-the-scenes of a Chinese Restaurant, and what it’s like in a small town where EVERYBODY knows each other. We also highlight stories from other Chinese families in Australia who have run Chinese restaurants from the 1960s until now.
📺 The full conversation is available on YouTube (link in bio). It goes for 1 hour, but it’s worth it and you can basically listen to it like a podcast!
Thank you to @jenniferwongcomedian for hosting, for translating Cantonese to English for the crowd, and approaching the conversation with such nuance and understanding. Thank you to Danny Yam for your honesty, wisdom, and humour. Thank you to Shelly and Andy for filming this iconic conversation. Lastly, thank you to @michellemaartensz and @maitlandregionalartgallery for providing a space for this conversation to happen.
You can find more stories about regional Chinese restaurants in Australia in the book ‘Chopsticks or Fork?’ by Jennifer Wong and Lin Jie Kong.

It’s the final weekend to catch ‘Chinese Restaurant Playground’ at @maitlandregionalartgallery. 🧧
It has been such a pleasure to share my family’s story in a town where I have so many childhood memories, but stories about families like mine are often missing from the dominant regional Australian narrative.
Despite this, it’s been wonderful to hear that my family’s story has resonated with an overwhelming number of people in the community. From customers of the restaurant, children of restaurant owners, people who run small businesses, my teachers from school, childhood friends, family friends, young children, the elderly, people who have travelled from elsewhere to see the exhibition… the list goes on.
This experience has been so wholesome and such a privilege. I hope to share more stories in the future that continue to bring communities together. 💚
Head over to Maitland this weekend to grab some lunch and do a final walk through the exhibition before it closes at the end of the day on 24th August. Remember to leave a message in the guest book too. 📖

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
Keep track of Instagram updates discreetly while protecting your privacy and staying anonymous.
