Hailing from Recife, Brazil, Coco dos Pretos have proven themselves as a symbol of resilience, and cultural significance. Since 2006, the group has pioneered an innovative approach to the traditional coco rhythm, expanding and refining its sound while staying rooted in ancestral heritage.

Based in the Chão de Estrelas community, the group not only holds rehearsals but also leads a meaningful socio-cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-descendant culture. Through their work, they challenge the stigmas often attached to popular traditions such as coco, and above all, they celebrate and strengthen Afro-Brazilian

Ishmael Ensemble returns to Stroud on Friday 8th May 2026 for a special in the round performance at The Goods Shed, joined by The Rituals Orchestra and a host of guest vocalists.

Following the acclaimed release of their 2024 album Rituals and an extensive tour across the UK, Europe & Australia, bandleader Pete Cunningham expands on the ideas first explored in the recording studio. For the album sessions, Cunningham assembled a unique combination of harp, string & horn players to create lush, cinematic textures; now brought to life on stage alongside guest vocalists, the forming of The Rituals Orchestra has offered an opportunity to re-interpret music from the entire Ishmael Ensemble back catalogue in a new and exciting way.

It was a truly special year.

There was a nervousness about this festival on a few levels: moving our date from its regular spot, having enough in our budgets to get it over the line and of the craziness of this particular time we all find ourselves in, but the positivity, optimism and warmth of those that believe in this fest shows that there is truly something remarkable about how the arts can make the difference.

A programme built on connection, not hierarchy.

A space where emerging artists stand alongside those shaping the wider landscape, and where new forms begin to take hold.

Across the weekend, stage partners and crews from across the country bring their own energy into the valley, each one shaping a different current within the wider flow.

My residency at @sva__ opens to the public tomorrow and Saturday (Friday 17th and Saturday 18th) 10-3pm. I will be there both days to welcome you.

It’s been a fruitful couple of days where I have been able to try out combining works in one space and thinking about the material and thematic links both the ones I was aware of and new ones which emerge when new combinations are created.
