@thehookscl hosted a 7-day training on music production for 2 films entering into production. The program was designed to teach music production and music supervision. We had 6 participants for the Music Supervision stream that learned how to cue music for the scripts, write briefs, manage budget and license and clear the works. The 4 Music producers in training delivered 12 top tier songs that will now be licensed for those movies.

In Sync! 🔐🫱🏾‍🫲🏽🫶🏽

It was an honour to bring these two amazing humans to Nova Scotia with me to deliver a Music Production for Sync and Music Supervision training as part of the Black Above the Line film program. I spent 7 days watching @vybzchantel and @iamcharles_collymore shine, deliver and pour into 10 amazing talents focused on elevating their careers in music production and music supervision.

We ate together, learned together and laughed way too much together. I have to say being surrounded by others that share your vision of empowering others, extend empathy, who can cook meals with you and can enjoy and respect each other's company while working together is the best! I am so appreciative of these two and it's my pleasure to make space for others to see them shine in their respective fields!

My heart is full ❤️.

STORY TIME!! 📖🤗

So this human right here I met as a photographer who was scheduled to take my new updated headshots. When I arrived we introduced ourselves and immediate got to talking about who we are and what we do. That's when he told me that he was working on a film. The story he outlined smacked me in my face. It was so powerful and vulnerable at the same time and I resignated with the topic so innately as I had not too long went through watching a close family member diagnosed with Dimentia and had seen the effects it had until it took their life. I shared my congratulations on working on such a well needed topic specifically for the Caribbean community as there is still such a stigma around this degenerative disease.

A month later, I was on my way to Banff Media and Film Conference and Festival where I spotted this awesome human again. We spoke and this time we discussed in detail how I could help in setting the audible tone for the film and what that could potentially look like. We quickly moved on over the next couple of days on our own journey. I left Banff on Wed, sch'd a meeting with this gentleman on Friday and was brought on to do the job by Monday!

We had 30 days to get a unique and culturally authentic soundscape for the story and characters. The great @abentimus was brought on to compose and boy did he understand the assignment. Together we cued out the film, help identify the emotional undertone, required tempo, themes and builds. Needless to say, #TristanBarrocks and the Mid-Career Production team were extremely happy. With a few edits and tweaks noted, I am very proud and satisfied with what was completed on our end.

To finally have the opportunity to watch the movie this past weekend on a big screen to a packed theatre was absolutely surreal. GOD IS GOOD!! Where I've been taken in my life, who I've chanced to meet, the beautiful things I've touched and felt, this is definitely one of my precious core moments locked in. This film, how it came to be, the story itself -- everything is what I represent and stand for and where I want to go and currently heading. I am honoured to be a part of this brilliant project. 🥂

Music has 1 job in TV and film. Do you know what it is? 🧐

When considering pitching music for television and film, we say it's always best that you take off your radio, album and performance hat and think like you work in the film industry.

Music in this medium is more of a "mood motivator" than a story teller (unless it's for reality TV - those lyrics stay giving it all away! 😉). Consider the visual mediums you're pitching for. Is it horror, drama, coming-of-age, a period piece, sci-fi? Every visual medium has a formula of sound.

Master the moods for each one by tempo, instrumentation and dynamics with lyrics that can bend to support the audience and the way they connect to the story being told. By doing this, one song can have multiple lives on screen.

The hottest topic for a creator. It's always crazy to me that the one thing that creators in the art space lose first are their rights. Their copyrights. The right to have a say. The right to be credited for their creation.

No I'm not bashing AI. I'm fully aware that it has the potential to be a fantastic tool and in these times of advanced technology and the expectations around expansive progress to make our lives easier, we essentially asked for this. I say lean in but it would be nice if we didn't live in a world that was so reactive when it comes to the artist. The creator seems to be always the last to be considered while creative espionage happens on every platform. The Spotify's, Apple Music, Tidal - all the ways we now consume music, profit over and above the artist just from being a carrier, not a creator. Now with AI, there's a new creator that creates by way of utilizing what has already been created and doesn't need to eat, sleep or pay rent. With these 2 monsters at large, how do we save the real creators that fully and wholly understand our moods, share in our experiences and have the innate power to express life that we're all sharing?

Time will tell and hopefully on the human creators side once the dust settles. But somehow, some way, we need to get back to a place where we respect the artist and their role for our healing, expression and experiences. I will absolutely lean into AI but I will ALWAYS ride for the human creator 🫂 #respectthecopyrightholder
