LA BECQUE PORTRAITS - Colin Self
Learn more about the American artist, composer and puppeteer Colin (@colinself)’s three-month residency as part of our Principal Residency Program with this new video in our series of portraits of La Becque residents.

While at La Becque, Colin worked on a series of videos with Bobbi Salvör Menuez (@hi_its_bobbi), relating to their forthcoming record, ‘respite ∞ levity for the nameless ghost in crisis’, which comes out on February 21, 2025 on RVNG Intl. (@rvngintl). Colin also created some new ceramics and puppets, and developed a performance called ‘Voice for a Shadow’, which they presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (@centrepompidou) last October and at La Becque during the last session of our Open Studios in November 2024.

“I will hold you in the shadows until you are free” 🌗🫂

It is with a deeply seated spirit of gratitude and joy that I announce today my third LP, respite ∞ levity for the nameless ghost in crisis, aka r∞L4nGc, to be released on @rvngintl on February 21.

This is an album about guidance, honoring the legacies of deceased friends and strangers, and a journey of lost and found during times of despondence.

A few years ago I was introduced by my friend @tourmaliiine to Agosto Machado, an incredible artist and crucial figure in the history of Downtown New York, good friends and co-conspirator of the Stonewall Riots with Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson, and an integral figure of John Vaccaro’s Play-house of the Ridiculous, in the company of the Warholian dolls and the legacy of Pyramid Club. Agosto creates shrines which commemorate deceased community members, the countless figures lost to the AIDS crisis, and those who made up “the ensemble of life”. Immediately upon meeting Agosto I felt a deep sense of kinship, joy, and reverence for his thoughtful way of being with the dead community and the impact they’ve created on our lives.

It would be perhaps easiest for me to describe this album as a sonic shrine. Through my conversations with Agosto, Asher Hartman, and many others, I realized I was creating a record for/with my dead community as a way to celebrate and remember them, and create space to celebrate all the unnamed figures who created a world for me and my loved ones to survive and thrive in. This record could not have arrived into the world at a better time to build sanctuary with one another, find each other in coalition, to create islands of respite and levity for all of us living amidst times of crisis; the living, the dead, and all of those in between.

This past month, Colin Self took residence in the Pioneer Works Recording Studio as our April–May Music Resident. ⁠
⁠
An artist, composer, and puppeteer based between Brooklyn and Berlin, Self creates music, performances, and new systems for interfacing with the human spirit on a spectrum between the living and deceased. ⁠

This past Sunday, Self hosted an XOIR session—Self's group singing collective—in the garden as they continue work on a new choral LP which utilizes a specialized multi-channel wireless roving speaker array developed in collaboration with their cousin @peterjbowling. ⁠
