After screening at @thatkevinsmith ‘s @smodcastle.filmfest , @ironmulefest , and @nyshortfilmfest as well as being listed as a semi-finalist to screen at @flickers.riiff , it felt like it was time to (finally) post this publicly.

When I found out that Jared also went to college in New York, a crazy idea popped into my head: What if I offered him the lead role in my thesis film? As a 22 year old film student, I doubted Jared would even see my email, let alone want to get in his underwear and be in my weird little rom-com about online dating, but he ended up reading the script, loving it, and accepting the role.

Making the short was an absolute blast that resulted in a meaningful friendship full of movie-watching/ discussions. We’ve gotten to know each other’s families and seen various eccentric double features of our own making, including the Oscar-winning Women Talking and the Razzie-winning Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.

It’s crazy to think that I almost didn’t even send that email offering him the role. I told myself it probably would not happen, so why even try. It felt highly improbable, if not impossible, that Jared would want to go from starring in a sweet, symmetrical Wes Anderson picture to a scrappy, super raunchy, but heartfelt short film with jokes about everything from masturbation to cultural appropriation. We’ve gotten to know each other’s families and seen various eccentric double features of our own making, including the Oscar-winning Women Talking and the Razzie-winning Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.

It’s crazy to think that I almost didn’t even send that email offering him the role. I told myself it probably would not happen, so why even try. It felt highly improbable, if not impossible, that Jared would want to go from starring in a sweet, symmetrical Wes Anderson picture to a scrappy, super raunchy, but heartfelt short film with jokes about everything from masturbation to cultural appropriation. But, after being encouraged by my mom and thesis advisor Todd, I decided to give it a shot and, somehow, Jared took a chance on me. I’ll always be grateful to him for that.

This all taught me a valuable lesson that I come back to every single day. Whether you are casting a movie or doing anything in life, if you do not try, the answer will always be no, but if you put yourself out there and take a chance, you never know what can happen.

Hard to believe that, 1 year ago today, we arrived at that summer camp &, 1 year ago tomorrow, we officially started shooting @campswinelake . These photos are from our 1st day filming at camp. Really feels like much longer ago. It might sound overdramatic for a pig-zombie movie, but there’s a piece of me that never fully left that camp, for better & for worse. After wrapping the film, I questioned everything about myself & had to work very hard to remember who I really was/am. To say I learned a lot would be a huge understatement. It was a bittersweet time. It’s taken me a long time to heal, forgive myself/others, & accept the fact that, despite my many mistakes & all the things I could’ve done better, I did the best I could making my 1st feature film. I was lucky enough to see @mnight Shyamalan speak after a screening of Lady in the Water & he talked about the importance of manifestation/coincidences in his life/work. His dorm was covered with Spielberg posters, produced by Kennedy/Marshall. Their names in the billing block were the last thing he saw before shutting his eyes & the first thing he glimpsed when waking up. Little did he know he would work with them both. Sure, he got incredibly lucky & most of us won’t experience that. But still. I went to this screening to hear him speak/not knowing much about the movie & I was pleasantly surprised to hear that, although I was mixed on it, what Shyamalan considers his most personal film was released in 2006, the same year I saw Barnyard with my mom, which was the first movie I can remember watching in a movie theater. It’s also the year I chose to set Swinelake in as a tribute to that formative moment in my life/filmmaking journey. While shooting Swinelake, 2006 kept popping up. At the camp, “Teens ‘06” happened to be prominently painted on a switch box. When we needed a car for a scene, we used our AD’s. A 2006 Honda Odyssey. The craziest of all was that, unbeknownst to me, Penelope, an obscure @riccigrams film about a girl with a pig snout which terrified me as kid, also came out in ‘06. I don’t know what it all means, but it feels like a sign to keep going, even when things get tough.

Hard to believe that, 1 year ago today, we arrived at that summer camp &, 1 year ago tomorrow, we officially started shooting @campswinelake . These photos are from our 1st day filming at camp. Really feels like much longer ago. It might sound overdramatic for a pig-zombie movie, but there’s a piece of me that never fully left that camp, for better & for worse. After wrapping the film, I questioned everything about myself & had to work very hard to remember who I really was/am. To say I learned a lot would be a huge understatement. It was a bittersweet time. It’s taken me a long time to heal, forgive myself/others, & accept the fact that, despite my many mistakes & all the things I could’ve done better, I did the best I could making my 1st feature film. I was lucky enough to see @mnight Shyamalan speak after a screening of Lady in the Water & he talked about the importance of manifestation/coincidences in his life/work. His dorm was covered with Spielberg posters, produced by Kennedy/Marshall. Their names in the billing block were the last thing he saw before shutting his eyes & the first thing he glimpsed when waking up. Little did he know he would work with them both. Sure, he got incredibly lucky & most of us won’t experience that. But still. I went to this screening to hear him speak/not knowing much about the movie & I was pleasantly surprised to hear that, although I was mixed on it, what Shyamalan considers his most personal film was released in 2006, the same year I saw Barnyard with my mom, which was the first movie I can remember watching in a movie theater. It’s also the year I chose to set Swinelake in as a tribute to that formative moment in my life/filmmaking journey. While shooting Swinelake, 2006 kept popping up. At the camp, “Teens ‘06” happened to be prominently painted on a switch box. When we needed a car for a scene, we used our AD’s. A 2006 Honda Odyssey. The craziest of all was that, unbeknownst to me, Penelope, an obscure @riccigrams film about a girl with a pig snout which terrified me as kid, also came out in ‘06. I don’t know what it all means, but it feels like a sign to keep going, even when things get tough.

About a month or so ago, I realized it would be making its U.K. premiere at the same time I was planning to visit Edinburgh (surprisingly pronounced Edd-inn-burr-uh), so it worked out perfectly!! While some aspects of the movie worked better for me than others, the film ultimately won me over with its big laughs and unexpectedly big heart. The cast is great and so is the Toxie makeup / suit. Would make for a great double feature with the new Naked Gun. Yesterday, I had the true honor of screening my @svafilmnyc thesis short Gen. Sex starring @gilmanjared at @smodcastle.filmfest hosted by @odblues7 (Ernie O’Donnell) and @thatkevinsmith. Ever since I saw @clerksmovie for the first time in my freshman year of college, I have wanted to visit the iconic @quickstopgroceries. I’ve also been dying to catch a movie at @smodcastlecinemas and see all the View Askew memorabilia for some time now. It was a bit nerve-wracking and I wasn’t fully present for some of it, but getting to attend this festival and meet the guy who started it all, ask him for advice, and tell him about my upcoming @tromateam production @campswinelake is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.
