๐ฅHwa Records is a team of Korean diasporic performance based artists and healers composed of Roger Kim, Saewon Oh, Kayla Tange, and Caroline Yoo. Hwa Records was conceived after Caroline Yoo was diagnosed with hwa-byung in 2020. Hwa-byung (fire sickness) is a Korean folk syndrome attributed to the suppression of anger where pent up emotions then manifest in the body.
๐ฅThis documented performance was originally a live 40 minute long performance at the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Francisco on April 21, 2022. The Hwa Records team not only performs and purges individual and collective hwa, loosely translated to fire, rage, and/or pent-up emotion, but also creates rituals for our ancestors to feel at peace by honoring and sending off our historical traumas in the performance.
๐ฅHwa Records uses intimate workshops and experimental performance to create community space for diasporic Koreans to discuss and alleviate some of these pressures, and to create places to collectively process the ever-present, but only recently acknowledged racism directed towards Asians.

The AIR will expand and deepen ICA LAโs presence in the DTLA Arts Districtโa neighborhood where artists have lived and worked for decades. After a nominations and application process, ICA LA has selected its inaugural cohort of Los Angeles-based artists: Mohammad Tayyeb (@oktayyeb), Julie Tolentino (@thejulietolentino), and Hwa Records (@hwarecords).
Each AIR receives free dedicated studio space for a year; a generous $25,000 honorarium; a stipend for materials, research, and production; and ample opportunities to collaborate with ICA LA staff, supporters, and publics.
Over the years, ICA LAโs program has maintained a sustained dedication to celebrating the emerging, the overlooked, and the marginalized voices of contemporary art and culture. Working in and across the mediums of performance, sound, workshops, and healing practices, for artists Mohammad Tayyeb, Julie Tolentino, and Hwa Records, the invitation to be in residence at ICA LA marks an unparalleled and singular opportunity at pivotal junctures in their respective practices.

Hwa Records is a team of diasporic Korean performance-based artists and healers composed of Roger Kim (@rodgepodgemusic), Saewon Oh (@saewwwon), Kayla Tange (@kayla.tange), and C.Ryu (@c.ryu_portal).
Hwa Records formed when C.Ryu was diagnosed with hwa-byung in 2020. Hwa-byung translates literally to fire/anger sickness. Per Dr. Bou-Yong Rhi, the syndrome can come from feelings of restraint when confronting feelings of anger as a consequence of unjust circumstancesโthis restraint, anger, and rage then manifest physically in the body. In Korea, hwa-byung patients are often older women struggling with the weight of an extremely rigid and strict patriarchal society. For Korean Americans, however, hwabyung can come from continued trauma, racism, and the continued pain of imperialism.
Powerfully, Hwa Records uses music to address and heal a collective hwabyung. Through workshops and performances, Hwa Records releases communal hwa through an intersection of music, meditation, and storytelling. For the Diasporic Refractions: Performances program, Hwa Records will be one of four artists/artist groups coming together to create a performance that exhibits the transformation of collective memory and demands collective imagining and building of liberatory futures. Hwa Recordsโs inclusion is especially memorable for our community, as co-founder Roger Kim was formerly a GYOPO volunteer.

In Korea, hwa-byung patients are often older women struggling with the weight of an extremely rigid and strict patriarchal society. Ryu, and Kayla Tangeโexploring hwa-byung (fire sickness), a folk syndrome where suppressed anger manifests in the body. Through workshops and performances, they address racism, inherited trauma, and the lasting impact of the Korean War and Japanese imperialism. Their performances integrate meditation, storytelling, and musical play to release collective hwa, honoring and letting go of ancestral burdens. Hwa Records has performed at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco and 41 Ross Gallery and received funding from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, among others. ๐ฅฃ Hwa Records is a collective of Korean diasporic artists and healersโRoger Kim, Saewon Oh, C. Ryu, and Kayla Tangeโexploring hwa-byung (fire sickness), a folk syndrome where suppressed anger manifests in the body. Through workshops and performances, they address racism, inherited trauma, and the lasting impact of the Korean War and Japanese imperialism. Their performances integrate meditation, storytelling, and musical play to release collective hwa, honoring and letting go of ancestral burdens. Hwa Records has performed at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco and 41 Ross Gallery and received funding from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, among others. They seek to ease the pressures of liminal existence, creating space for healing and transformation.ย

โค๏ธโ๐ฅHwa Records translates and mistranslates Hwa ํ as fire, pent-up emotion, rage, and flower.
๐ฉธThrough voice, movement, sound, and projection, Hwa Records creates immersive experimental performances exploring how historical record, memory, and lived experience may not always align with the complexities of migration, culture induced shame, and ancestral lineage. By searching for our own paths of becoming we embody our defiant definitions of what โKoreanโ and โAmericanโ means. Hwa Records invites the audiences to witness the rebirth, the transmutation of our HWA. Hwa Records has performed at Institute of Contemporary Art, San Francisco and 41.Ross Gallery.
๐ฅHwa Records began when one of our facilitators was diagnosed with ํ๋ณ hwa-byung or โfire sicknessโ. Hwa-byung is defined as a culture-bound syndrome, mostly affecting women, and; a Korean folk syndrome attributed to the suppression of anger where pent up emotions manifest in the body as difficulty eating, sleeping, and breathing. While the diagnosis in South Korea occurs primarily in middle-age to older women suffering under a prevalently patriarchal society, through further research we found that hwa-byung in the United States could also be caused by displacement stresses such as balancing two cultures - in this case Korean and American.
๐ฉธThis gave birth to Hwa Records. Although not all Korean-Americans have hwa-byung, many experience some form of self-suppression and pent-up emotion from our collective experience as an immigrant community, navigating conflicts of culture, racism, and microaggressions in our daily lives. We created these workshops to share our methods of catharsis in hopes to gift another tool to our peoples to help release our hwa.
