We don't always get to choose what happens to us. We do get to choose what we do with it.

At 14, I survived a bad accident that left me with severe burns and little chance of making it.

Fear was everywhere. But somewhere in that, I learned to use it rather than fight it.

I was lucky enough to be a guest on @sallyanne_airey's Fearless Forward podcast this week.

She asked great questions and it was a genuinely good conversation.

The last day of #FaceEqualityWeek.

For me personally, face equality isn't really about faces.

It's about dignity. Belonging. Eye contact. Presence.

It's about creating a world where people don't feel they have to hide parts of themselves to feel accepted.

We're all more connected than ever, right — so why do I feel that so many more people are hiding?

The people society has overlooked, sidelined, or made to feel like they don't quite fit — many of them have quietly become wisdom keepers.

Not despite their experience. Because of it.

They've had to find their own way through. To flip what could have pushed people away into what draws them closer.

To stay open when every instinct said close.

Adversity isn't always a gift. But sometimes it forges something in people that comfort never could.

Think Before You Speak. And — who in your life has had to find another way? Have you ever asked them what they found?

It's Face Equality Week — and today I want to talk about identity.

We live in a world that teaches us to build identity from the outside in.

Appearance. Status. Performance.
Perception.

Most of us never question it — because we never have to.

Visible difference interrupts that system.

Maybe that's why many people who've been marginalised or made to feel 'other' can become incredibly grounded. They've had to build identity from somewhere deeper — somewhere appearance, status and perception couldn't reach.

Think Before You Speak. But also — think about what you're building your identity on.

How quickly do we react to appearance?

Sometimes with curiosity.
Sometimes kindness.
Sometimes discomfort.
Sometimes with words we probably haven’t fully thought through.

"Think Before You Speak" isn't really about policing language.

It's about remembering there's a human being underneath whatever you noticed first.

Most of us know what it feels like to be judged too quickly for something.
