@refugeworldwide radio presents ECO: The ExtraCorporeal Orchestra | @sonicsupport.co, @abbzah & @thomasthinks

Abbas Zahedi and Tom Harris present a monthly series of live performances and radio transmissions exploring grief, care and the act of listening. Each month alternates between live sessions recorded at London hospices and studio recordings, with Zahedi and Harris as the creative core of the series and space for additional collaborators across both formats. Every iteration takes a distinct, improvisational approach to shared presence and engagement with experiences of grief, death and dying.

The series forms part of a wider year-long project — SONIC SUPPORT: ECO (The Extracorporeal Orchestra) — in which Zahedi works across hospices, hospitals and public sites to create spaces for collective and individual listening, exploring how sound can support reflection, care and creative expression within end-of-life and healthcare contexts.

SONIC SUPPORT: ECO forms part of @imperialcharity Artist in Residence Programme, delivered in collaboration with @studiovoltairelondon, and supported by @aceagrams and Imperial Health Charity.

A couple weeks ago @thomasthinks and I presented the first performance of SONIC SUPPORT: ECO (The Extracorporeal Orchestra) at @royaltrinityhospice, the oldest hospice in the UK, to staff, patients and members of the public. It is a project years in the making; from a life-support ECMO machine at @nottm_contemp, to the seed of ECO taking shape with @bchubchu in @agentnocturn, to @sonicsupport.co finding its home with the support of @imperialcharity and @studiovoltairelondon.

I spent the first three decades of my life in and out of hospices, hospitals and intensive care units. For the last ten years I have been processing much of that through my work. The consistent thread through all of it is sound; an approach to the sonic that is affect-driven and relational; not soothing; not decorative; something that meets the intensity of what is actually there.
SONIC SUPPORT: ECO is where that processing becomes a platform; a living ensemble for performers and sound artists to bring their own encounters with end-of-life and life-altering states. @thomasthinks is a key counterpart in this. What we made that night was not easy to sit with, and that was the point. There was relief in it; an ability to feel without shame.

This Tuesday 21st April at 7pm CET the recording of that first performance broadcasts on @refugeworldwide as the first transmission of the series, and then monthly from there, with space for other collaborators along the way.

The project runs through to March 2027, developed as part of @imperialcharity Artist in Residence Programme in collaboration with @studiovoltairelondon supported by @aceagrams

This is one of the first completely original songs I recorded back in 2013 prod. by @thomasthinks during our project s2dio days.

This particular live recorded version was for @_demonfm whilst completing our degrees at @dmuleicester

At some point in the near future I will put ‘the getaway’ up for download on Bandcamp at the very least.

The full video is still on YouTube under “K.J.Palmer - The Getaway”.

This was created at a time when I reallly loved experimenting and delivering more reflective thoughts.

Very grateful to be in the mindframe to release music again, and maybe just maybe what I deliver can connect and touch a few souls out there… who knows.
