I am incredibly excited to share some news about a project that is very important to me.
When Women Fly is a photo series about the female participation in the Danza de los Voladores, a traditionally male ritual performed in Cuetzalan del Progreso, Puebla, Mexico.
I first travelled to Cuetzalan in 2013 as an anthropology student. I returned many times over the years, meeting and working with many special people who became so important in my life.
I’m thrilled to announce that today When Women Fly has been published in awonderful piece on National Geographic @natgeo. I had the unique opportunity to work with a very talented team of people and to travel to Cuetzalan to shoot the videos that go along with the photos and the text.
I am extremely grateful to @mayanmvalentine and @cosimaam, the photo editor and video producer of this piece, for their amazing work and support. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to go back to Cuetzalan and to add a different perspective to this project. A massive thanks goes also to @jordansalama19, for the beautiful and thoughtful article you wrote and for the enthusiasm you shared from the very first instance about working on this piece.

Nosotras no implantamos moda; nosotras implantamos cultura”.

ENG 🇬🇧 Karina, the youngest daughter of Jorge Baltazar, is one of the first three women to participate in the Danza de los Voladores in Cuetzalan, alongside her sisters Georgina and Ermelinda.
“I believe what we women bring to the dance is showing others that nothing is impossible, that it can be done, that if we were able to do it, then the girls who are doing it now can also see for themselves that yes, we can. We did not create a trend; we created culture.”
Excerpt from the project ‘Volar. Una historia familiar’, an ethnographic book that tells how the ritual has evolved across three generations of voladores belonging to the same family, made possible thanks to the support of the PACMYC grant by @k_e_gonzalez, @va.luo, the Baltazar family, and grupo Cuapatanini.
Many thanks to @elcallejondelganan for the support and to @_03ct for scanning the photos.
