A central voice in the living memory of Cabo Verdean music, Lutchinha Leite arrives in Berlin for a rare and long-awaited gathering. Born on the island of São Vicente, she carries through her voice the Sodade, warmth and rhythmic subtlety of the archipelago.

Joined by friends and musicians from Berlin’s diasporic music scene, the ensemble moves through morna, coladeira and other Atlantic currents. An intimate encounter of this traditinal music made famous accross the globe through the voice of the immortal Cesaria Evora. Join us to give a warm welcome to Lutchinha and Igor who travelled from far away to see us!

Rooted in Afro-Cuban ceremonial traditions and carried by the vibrant pulse of the diaspora, Grupo Alafia con Iré explores the spiritual and musical heritage of Yorùbá culture through rhythm, singing and collective trance.

Bringing together percussion, call-and-response vocals and dance, the group opens a space where sacred tradition meets the contemporary reality of Berlin’s cultural landscape. A powerful and communal performance navigating between devotion, resistance and celebration. No se la quieren perder!

LUTCHINHA LEITE & FRIENDS 🌺

A central voice in the modern story of Cabo Verdean music, Lutchinha Leite arrives in Berlin for a rare and long-awaited reunion. Born Maria Neves Leite on the island of São Vicente, she has spent over four decades carrying the soul of her homeland across Europe, Africa, and the United States, while cultivating a vibrant cultural life within her community in Brockton, Massachussets.

She is joined by pianist Igor Sassety, traveling directly from Cabo Verde, and by Félix Huet and Héléna Fontaine of the Berlin-based project @apandadosol , on guitar, cavaquinho, and vocals. The four musicians first met one night at the legendary @bombumininu in Mindelo, bonding right away in music and in friendship, and have tried ever since to reunite again.

Rooted in morna, coladeira, and other traditional forms of music made famous to the rest of the world by the great Cesaria Evora, this quartet navigates between African rhythmic heritage and Lusophone melodic expression. Lutchinha’s voice embodies the saudade, warmth, and quiet resilience at the heart of Cabo Verdean identity.

A unique evening on our Berlin stages, where this astonishingly beautiful musical genre is still very underrepresentated.

Festivities will start with @panebasaa bringing their mbiras, voices & cello for an adventure that draws inspiration from the traditional and contemporary musics from Zimbabwe, South Africa and other neighbouring countries as well as classical, minimal and electronic impulses from their vibrant home base of Berlin. A sonic and antique transe that will enchant everyone present with us that night 🌙

Musicians: @jawmbira @tsepo.pooe @empunzi with @dudukouate as a guest on the percussion for this special evening

Second concert of that first night will be @feu.marinho and his quintet, blending Brazilian, Jazz and Eastern Music within compositions that reflect several landscapes of existence. Songs from his upcoming album, composed in Berlin and carrying distant sounds of joy. A poetic and rhythmic adventure around his unique stage presence and phenomenal band 🌹

Recording on tape yesterday was a dream!! Introduced at Abbey Road in 1986, the Studer A820 24-track tape machine is one of the last generations of analogue multitrack recorders ✨📻

First, the incredible audio quality, but also and foremost, the process as musician and sound engineer we found much more interesting and productive... Decisions must be taken now and you don't end up with a pile of takes to go through. It is raw and pure moment. You hear the technician looking for the right moment to punch you back in, and you focus more on your performance.

Song is called "Odjos Pretos" (traditional) and was recorded by the Conjunto Noitinha in 1966 on the record label Rapsodia 🇨🇻. That is so far the only existing recording of this song that we know of, full of longing and emotion. A splendid melody too rarely played that we decided to bring back to the surface ♥️
