Dutch artist Martyn Deijkers is one of the most quietly influential figures in UK bass, having spent over two decades shaping the underground through his work, from his early roots in the 90s drum & bass scene, to helping define the sound of dubstep in the mid 2000s
In 2007 he co-founded the inimitable @_3024_music_ , a label that has become a cornerstone of the scene, releasing essential music from the likes of Jacques Greene, Leon Vynehall, Otik and Ehua
This week sees him release his first album in 8 years - Music For Existing - a body of work that “serves as a love letter to the communal act of making music - something that is both healing and inherently defiant”
With the new album out this Friday (May 15th), it felt like the perfect time to invite him on for a Top 3:
Spirit - Bittersweet
“Almost every single Spirit track opened up doors for other producers to try out new things. This Revolve:r B-side is one of his greatest and most innovative tracks, and was a massive inspiration for me both as a dj and budding producer - you can hear this sound echo’ing all the way through the early 00s and 2010 post dubstep sound. Spirit is the master of the off kilter riffs, and Digital provides the frequencies!”
Digital Mystikz - Earth a Run Red
“It doesn’t matter in what state of mind I’m in, when I hear the intro to this track I am LOCKED IN. Another underrated B-side and imo amongst Mala & Coki’s best work - and they are TOP people which is also very important to me. Funny how this riff is not even that far removed from Spirit’s stuff if you think about it - all about creating that perfectly infectious interplay between drums and bass.”
Cyba Space ft. Shanie - Search For Me (Dillinja Remix)
“I think the biggest compliment you can get as a producer is when people instantly recognize your track in the club - and Dillinja never fails. He has so many underrated gems, on forgotten labels and or remixes for forgotten artists, such as this one for Cyba Space (rave/techno innovator Jack Smooth) and Shanie. This track is a storm!”

I thought their releases were so different to anything I’d heard before, having mostly been aquatinted with teklife and metalheadz in Amsterdam. The original (and the Rashad remix) are both ones I’ve been rinsing the best of a decade now. The sample is unbelievably haunting and I love transitioning into thumbly wobbly halftime from this one.”
