Teamwork, experimentation and a whole lot of post-production has resulted in this week’s absolutely glowing Wild One, ‘Reimagining’, from Naarm-based ethereal bass producer, Rita Bass.

The music video for ‘Reimagining’ rolls together magical whimsy, trippy curiosity and augmented natural scenes as naturally as its corresponding track blends chopped breaks with ethereal timbres, as a glowing silhouette spirit guide coaxes Rita into the unknown of the deep blue night. “The idea for the glowing girl grew organically when thinking about creating a dreamlike yet tactile visual language” explains music video director Maxine Zanoni. “It was the perfect way to add an element of magic to our grounded, real-world locations. Paired with the macro shots of birds, ants, clouds and ocean, this glowing girl became a guide for Rita, leading her back to a sense of curiosity about the world around her.”

A remarkable visual feat that took plenty of prep (and post) work, cinematographer Shaki Prasanna says the production team began their planning “by asking how to make the subject glow without placing lights directly on them, which sent us into the world of bioluminescence, reflective materials, and even the 1982 Blade Runner trick of bouncing light off a two-way mirror at 45 degrees to mimic glowing eyes… The real challenge was pushing light onto a subject more than 10 meters away with limited budget and power.”

Ending 2025 I chose not to make a dance mix, but instead a fragmented collection or gallimaufry of emotional states through sound. The mix moves between undulating vocal ambience, granulated-spoken word, glitch, IDM and experimental bits. Beats may harshly cut into languorous piano solos, or unfurl into elegiac guitar. Then the tempo may rise again to frantic, up-tempo percussive cuts. Of course, there’s also a fair amount of Russian and Armenian music, an ode to the ethnic celebration that is Capers.

Rita Bass is a producer, live act, and DJ who explores disconnect and its resultant heartache of longing through sound. Her productions are unbridled in restless emotion – a semantic susurrus of vocal experiments layered over heavy bass and fractured breakbeats, teetering into IDM, using granulation and randomisation to shift from harmony and dance to blitzed-out glitch. As a DJ, Rita gets to explore the darker sounds she loves as deeply, weaving bass, techno, jungle, IDM and experimental cuts into percussive mixes.

I’ve always wanted to make a music video and I’m sooo blessed to have worked with @maxinezzanoni who completely brought the track to life. So many moments over three days where I felt I was going to cry. One that sticks out is @biancadimattina dancing on top of a hill in the darkness, covered in lights, to ‘Reimagining’ through a UE boom. In that moment, watching her improvise so incredibly, I felt how overwhelmingly beautiful it was to witness people come together over something I made in my bedroom. Never experienced that before and it was so special.

A HUGE shout out to @shaki.prasanna on cinematography, turning Maxine’s glowing girl concept into reality (with @drivinginangelsgear on vfx!!), also my in-and-underwater companion. Even though we both struggled on that front and I may have even experienced the first symptoms of hypothermia… worth it tho…
