And on the topic of @tate collection displays, Gallery 13 in โIn the Studioโ section at Tate Modern features โPoetics of Blacknessโ with works by Dawoud Bey and Roy DeCarava, addressing histories of Blackness, visibility and invisibility. Apologies for my pics which do no justice to the photographs and installation.
DeCaravaโs photographs, spanning 30 years, portray figures in private and public settings in New York City, particularly in Harlem where he lived. DeCaravaโs sensitive handling of a dark tonal range is uniquely fitted to his representation of Black skin and moments of intimacy. Beyโs series Night Coming Tenderly, Black 2017 explores real and imagined sites along the Underground Railroad.
In the prints, Bey pays homage to DeCarava, foregrounding what his predecessor called โa world shaped by Blacknessโ. Both photographers have coaxed incredible nuance and expression out of darkness. DeCaravaโs impeccable dark room skills and printing techniques result in images of the darkest tones, which encourage viewers to slow down to look. He inspired Bey to create metaphorical images of darkness, representing the vulnerability and hope encountered by those fleeing slavery. Bey has described his aim of โholding darkness itself in a tender embraceโ, much like DeCarava decades before.
Tremendous gratitude to co-curators and thought partners @valentine.umansky for years of conversation and research and always @andrewdebrun for being such a pro! I miss you incredible colleagues, and I miss London! ๐๐ผ

Working as a museum curator across two continents โin my case, LA and London until Feb of this yearโmeans that one doesnโt always install oneโs own collection displays. I am thrilled to finally see installedr at Tate Modern, โSovereignty of Quietโ, titled after Kevin Quashieโs 2012 book, โThe Sovereignty of Quiet: Beyond Resistance in Black Cultureโ, which explores โquietโ as a form of expression. It is the result of an ambitious acquisition committee (thank you NAAC), and dedicated curators and team (shout out to Andrew de Brรบn, Assistant Curator, International Art).
โIn humanity, quiet is inevitable, essential. It is a simple beautiful part of what it means to be alive. It is already there, if one is looking to understand it.โ
- Kevin Quashie
The works in this gallery present moments of repose, reflection and quiet. Writer Kevin Quashie thinks of quiet in relation to Black life as a โmetaphor for the full range of oneโs inner life - oneโs desires, ambitions, hungers, vulnerabilities, fears.
While highlighting narratives of everyday life and in between moments, this display also celebrates figurative works by Black artists from 1946 to the present. Elizabeth Catlettโs sculpture Pensive 1946, pays homage to the experiences of Black women workers; Jennifer Packerโs Hierarchy of Love 2023 depicts two figures lounging on a couch, watching television; Rashid Johnsonโs film Black and Blue 2021 documents the artistโs daily rituals during the 2020 Covid pandemic. The installation also includes work by Tau Lewis, Charles White,Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Robert Colescott, and Barkley Hendricks.
Together, the artists featured in this display invite us into moments of quiet, prompting us to engage with the complex interior lives of the figures they depict. It is part of Performer and Participant at Tate Modern through March 2027. ๐ค

It is part of Performer and Participant at Tate Modern through March 2027. ๐ค

New season of big shows all over New York! One that really resonates with me is Greater New York at @momaps1 curated by @cornelia.butler and #RubaKatrib along with their expert curatorial team. The exhibition presents a sensitive, raw portrayal of layers of precarities that come with living in New York at this moment. It highlights the flux of the city, the vanishing of local textures, labor of the working class, and the beautiful, handmade scrappiness of art made while surviving in a costly, heavily surveilled city, finding kinship, intimacy and community. Here are some fave moments โจ

What an opening night gala! Congrats to Peter Zumthor, Michael Govan, and LACMAโs staff, board, and community!
The David Geffen Galleries perform a choreography of light, form and objects, in a space of rarity, rawness and refinement. This building is alive with galleries that relinquish the linearity of classification and order, and makes way for multiple and diagonal meanings and experiences. Each curve is another gesture of welcome, and an invitation to wade in oceans and coves of time, to feel both power and tenderness, to slow down in a sanctuary for evolution and flux.
I remember early conversations with Michael, Peter and the team when I was a curator there, about Los Angeles, its rhythms, sunsets, and flow, LACMAโs collection, and historyโs ever changing perspectives, but nothing could have prepared me for the magnificence, magic, and marvel that this new building and installation are. Bravo!

Bravo!

@latimesimage Someone said heaven is on the corner of 76th and Western.
Itโs nearly 90 degrees on a Saturday in South-Central and โsister dreamer lauren halseyโs architectural ode to tha surge n splurge of south central los angelesโ is gleaming and activated. Thousands of people fill the streets that surround it in lit, ecstatic union. Parliament-Funkadelic is playing a live show onstage while we stomp the pavement in faithful entrancement. Skateboarders flip and flex on the Neighbors Skate Shop ramp, making sculptures out of their bodies in midair, while others double-dutch or Hula-Hoop in exacting harmony. People breathe with the art, they touch it, they feel it, they laugh with it.
This block party โ multigenerational, multivibrational โ is in celebration of the sand-colored sanctuary and sculpture park that is โsister dreamer,โ a direct expression of the monumentโs spirit and purpose. It is also a slice of what โsister dreamerโ will be home to every day, with programming informed by the three pillars of Halseyโs nonprofit Summaeverythang Community Center โ art, education and wellness.
Life in its most beautiful forms โ the poetic, artistic range of Black life in South-Central โ is on display everywhere you look here. Itโs also a reminder of a tenant thatโs been a part of Halseyโs work from the jump: An architectural monument only becomes truly meaningful when people can see a space for themselves there. Architecture, at its best, is people.

Congrats to @sable_elyse Smith on the Suzanne Deal Booth FLAG Art Foundation Prize and her new exhibition CLOCKWORK at @contemporaryatx ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
Itโs been an honor to be a part of this!
Using diverse imagery, media, and forms often intended for children and childhood to talk about carceral and criminal justice systems as well as Christianity and toxic masculinity, these discussions could not come at a more pointed and vital time in our history.Congrats @apkapkapk @maidensharon @thegrandsuze and the TCA team!!

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
Keep track of Instagram updates discreetly while protecting your privacy and staying anonymous.
