While highlighting narratives of everyday life and in between moments, this display also celebrates figurative works by Black artists from 1946 to the present. Elizabeth Catlett’s sculpture Pensive 1946, pays homage to the experiences of Black women workers; Jennifer Packer’s Hierarchy of Love 2023 depicts two figures lounging on a couch, watching television; Rashid Johnson’s film Black and Blue 2021 documents the artist’s daily rituals during the 2020 Covid pandemic. The installation also includes work by Tau Lewis, Charles White,Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Robert Colescott, and Barkley Hendricks.

Skateboarders flip and flex on the Neighbors Skate Shop ramp, making sculptures out of their bodies in midair, while others double-dutch or Hula-Hoop in exacting harmony. People breathe with the art, they touch it, they feel it, they laugh with it.

This block party — multigenerational, multivibrational — is in celebration of the sand-colored sanctuary and sculpture park that is “sister dreamer,” a direct expression of the monument’s spirit and purpose. Skateboarders flip and flex on the Neighbors Skate Shop ramp, making sculptures out of their bodies in midair, while others double-dutch or Hula-Hoop in exacting harmony. People breathe with the art, they touch it, they feel it, they laugh with it.

This block party — multigenerational, multivibrational — is in celebration of the sand-colored sanctuary and sculpture park that is “sister dreamer,” a direct expression of the monument’s spirit and purpose. It is also a slice of what “sister dreamer” will be home to every day, with programming informed by the three pillars of Halsey’s nonprofit Summaeverythang Community Center — art, education and wellness.

@museumsmovingforward Christine Y. Kim @see_why_kay is an independent curator and co-founder of LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) and GYOPO. Most recently, she curated sister dreamer, a major public work by artist Lauren Halsey in South Central Los Angeles. Previously, Christine has held curatorial positions at Tate Modern, London; LACMA; and The Studio Museum in Harlem. She also serves on the board of Denniston Hill @dennistonhill. After being involved with MMF since our very early days, Christine joined the board in 2025. She is based in Los Angeles.

Join the block party / street fair celebrating local communities, art, architecture, and life 🦚
